cider
Hello,

I'm taking up 14tonks' challenge from the "More on drugs" topic of this category suggesting we begin a drugs and dosages shorts list..

QUOTE
..make sense to start up a group project, such as compiling a list of shorts for usual dosages for the most common drugs. Someone volunteer to do A drugs, someone to do B drugs, etc., then we could post one list of all of them that could be accessed by the members who actually post here, or maybe even post several different lists, one configured for ShortHand import, one for IT, one for AutoCorrect, and one for QuickCorrect? If people put together a list, I don't mind running it through Excel some weekend to concatenate it in the different formats required for those imports.

Any of the lurking newbies interested in collaborating on a mutual-help project like that?

Being rather AR, I guess I'll start with "A". I hope to be back this evening with (at least the start of) a list for the letter A!

QUOTE
As this is the first post in the thread, I'm taking the liberty of editing it to add a sign-up sheet. As other people post to the thread volunteering for a letter, I will add them to the list below.

DRUGS AND DOSAGES--LETTERS VOLUNTEERED FOR

A: cider (10/16/2004)
B: sono_io (10/18/2004)
C: KellyRat (10/19/2004)
D: smilingjaguar (10/24/2004)
14tonks
Yeah, cider, way to go, girl!!! clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif

Okay, one flat-out, wet-behind-the-ears newbie with enough gumption to delurk, step up to the plate, and take a swing at contributing to the forums. You know what, cider, I don't have to know anything else about you to know that you are going to make a success of the MT business, because being a self-starter who is willing to work, and being able to research and learn on your own are the prime requirements for success in this field. highfive.gif

If it turns out there are just too many A drugs, feel free to post and ask if someone wants to pick up and continue from Al.., or whatever, onwards.

Now, any of you other newbies out there want to get out your copy of Drake and Drake, or buy yourself a copy, and start in on another letter? (By the way, there is a new 2005 edition of that great reference coming out in December, so if you don't have it yet, put it on your Christmas list.)

Harrie
AWESOME!

Thank you so much, Cider! Tonks is right, if you start going insane at a certain point during A, heck, you don't have to do the whole thing. And you don't have to rush it, either. But........very, very neat offer, cool! xyxthumbs.gif xyxthumbs.gif
cider
Okay, my "system" for shorts is not original except I've probably perverted the original, which is based on ABCZ, and Harrie's method (I think) for adding dosages. One change I made was to maintain the ABC idea even if the drug was more than 1 word. To differentiate I use just the first letter of the second word.

anax = Anaprox
anad = Anaprox DS

I use IT, transitioned from Smartype, and being so new, one additional 'cheat' I use is to let IT help me remember what a given drug is commonly prescribed for. I first enter each new drug as a 1 letter 'Word' and for the expansion I include the most common ailment in parentheses. The parentheses jump out at me so that even if I happen to mis-type and enter that word (instead of the 3+ letter short phrase) I'm not likely to miss it in my report. I'm not going to include those in this list since I suspect most people won't find it useful, but as an example:

b = Benicar (hypertension)
benr = Benicar
benr4 = Benicar 40 mg
benr2 = Benicar 20 mg
benr5 = Benicar 5 mg

Also, with IT, I don't worry too much about having duplicate shorts - so there are some, and my doses may seem a little odd, at times they drag on 'coz I know, with IT, I can type as little or as much as I'd like.

Since I'm just starting out, I don't know a common dose or drug from and uncommon one yet, so I just used D&D's Pharmaceutical Word Book (2003) and started with "A". Any doses not found in the Word Book come from Drug Information Center. If I couldn't find it there I left it alone.

Super list, Cider! xyxthumbs.gif

Just a quick note: Instant Text does not load duplicates so there is no need to worry about them. The only way you will see duplicates is if you manually open the glo file in a program like Notepad. The Condense feature will weed out duplicates, however, this feature may also change the order of your shorts.
Harrie
What a beautiful job! Serious gratitude to you, Cider. That's a work. Thank you!

You know, your mention of putting a one-letter entry to go in the Word section and then putting what it's for in parentheses interests me! I have some items I might try that with, not necessarily all drugs. I never thought of that! Cool!
cider
Thanks for the note about the duplicates, Cheryl. I've concentrated on avoiding them..I seem to recall a post about this by Harrie now that think about it..hmm. Anyhow, one less thing to worry about now puter.gif

Okay, I'll play! I'll work on C. Heck, I got my own dancing silly rat, it's the very least I can do! It may take awhile, but I'll work on it a little at a time. happy.gif

14tonks
Okay, Kelly has C. I think it will take a long time for everyone to get through their letter, and longer for us to get through the alphabet. Which is fine. Eventually it will all get done, and then it will be a useful thing to have around.
georg
And when the alphabet is finished, it'll be time to sort it for what's new, and what's off the market.

Good work all!
cider
Good point georg. I am leaving out anything found only (?) in JAN &/or discontinued as noted in the Word Book. (It's saving me a few entries.... happy.gif )
