So... It's been a while since I looked at Fedora as a serious option. Why not give it another look since it's rated so high on DistroWatch, what do I have to lose?

My first warning is bring a lunch! Downloaded the Fedora 12 install DVD and chose to use update repositories during the install. This takes some time!

I opted for the default spin, Gnome. Only because I used WIN7 to download the iso. WIN doesn't know what to do with a torrent file, used the ftp download.

So far so good. Full speed downloads with FireFox, 52MB+ and it found all my hardware just fine. I plan to play with it until 29 April when the release of UBUNTU 10.04 is released.

This is the best Fedora since at least version 9 or 8, didn't use either more than an hour since there were problems.

More confessions of a distro-hopper later. grin.gif

Does Fedora still remove AutoCorrect from the version of OpenOffice in their repos?

I guess I'm getting cynical. I'm starting to look at the Linux ecosystem as "distros with a purpose" and "everything else." For me, Fedora (like a lot of other distros) is in an in-between place that doesn't work better for any specific task.

Here are my 3 basic categories and distro choices:
* Arch Linux - The best distro for me, a truly bleeding edge and maintainable all-purpose distro.
* Ubuntu (or a derivative) - For ease of use (with Internet friendly website instructions) and for people new to desktop Linux.
* CentOS - For a RedHat-compatible Linux server in a commercial environment. (Disclaimer: I've had so much fun running an Arch server that I haven't played with CentOS much. But CentOS is probably what I would try first if someone asked me to set up a commercial/business Linux server.)

I'm looking forward to your follow-up post.

If that means spelling, it underlines misspelled words as you type. If not, I don't understand your question.

WINE is running one of the poker sites I like but I know it will fail on the other site I like. So far only a beta of WINE ran the second site but still not more than 80% or so.

I have no complaints so far. Didn't have to add anything for mp3 support. I have not tried all the different videos yet, that's on my agenda for today. So far this is on a par with Ubuntu 9.10 and I don't rate many distros that good for out of the box use and no ubergeek required to use it.

I'm going to add VBox today for that one poker site I like so I'll have some feedback on that later too.

AutoCorrect is a feature that replaces a mistyped word with a correct version. It can also be used as a simple word expander. Back when I used Fedora (versions 4-6) they had removed it from the version of OpenOffice that was is their repositories. I found this post which indicated that it was still being removed by the Fedora team as recently as version 11:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/for...=16&t=21724

I was just wondering if it was put back in Fedora 12, although I doubt it.

I guess, you're right then.

On the WINE front, it's running the APP that I thought it'd fail on. Been using it for hours and no crashes.

I have to say I'm surprised and happy.

No complaints with anything at all.

No MPEG support, Houston we have a problem!

Now I remember why I left Fedora way back when.

IMHO, just wait on Mint based on 10.04. It's all coming back to me now! yellowupset.gif

I'd sure be paging Houston on that one, too!

You probably need to use RPMFusion: http://rpmfusion.org

I used the Livna repositories for that stuff, but it looks like they merged with other repos and created RPMFusion.

I looked in the repos and couldn't find a way to add it so that drive now has kubuntu 10.04 b2 on it. I already knew I wasn't going to stick with Fedora and wanted to see the latest and greatest KDE.
