I just read this article and was wondering. Ubuntu can't be as slick as Windows 7 and Mac OS X... it's free. grin.gif

I attempted to upgrade my wife's laptop over the weekend but the servers were too slow so I'm going to try again in a few days.

Oh my God. I have to say that article makes me want Jaunty, bad! It sounds fantastic! And look at this - the article mentions "the seamless (finally!) integration of the Nvidia accelerated drivers." Wowee.

When you get it done and your wife has used it awhile, you can feel free to tell us about it. Enjoy reading about Arch, would enjoy reading about this Ubuntu version. I will say I saw that, regarding Autokey, Jaunty breaks it. Here's a quote about that from one of the folks who works on Autokey:

QUOTE
I'm afraid you've hit on a major snag there. The new version of X server
used in Jaunty has had a lot of internal changes, and one side effect of these
changes is that the X event system is totally broken. Autokey will be totally
unusable on Jaunty until this glaring bug is fixed. I raised a bug on this about
3 months ago but obviously that wasn't anything like enough time to fix a problem
of this magnitude.

I suspect Code Dog may have tried it, no?

Interesting! I know from configuring Arch that later versions of Xorg (1.5 and 1.6) like to use hal for hotplugging and detection of keyboards and mice. Part of that includes the evdev driver which checks for events from devices, I think. If Ubuntu went to that system and Autokey can't support it you might be out of luck...

Here's a brief overview of what evdev does:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evdev

But here's where it gets interesting. In Arch it's really easy to disable hotplugging, not use evdev, and still have an up-to-date system. You just follow the directions listed here at option 2:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginn...put_hotplugging

Still, I'm sure the Autokey developers will get it going with the new event method soon. In the meantime, you should all switch to Arch. grin.gif

Or maybe it's something specific to Ubuntu. I'll try installing Autokey on my Arch desktop, where I'm using evdev, later.

Mike, looking forward to reviews of both Ubuntu 9.04 and Arch - perhaps with screenshots happy.gif

I played with the last release candidate and the final release and had the same results. Fresh installs both time.

My issue was that Cedega apps were running at about 1/10th speed. I tried running just WINE and had the same issues. If you don't want to run any Windows apps I really didn't find any issues except it lost my sound a couple of times, had to reboot to get it back. doh.gif

Currently running Mint 6 Gnome and Mandriva 2009-one-Gnome. grin.gif

I have a great network connection and have seen download speeds over 25Meg. :-) I play with a lot of distros because it's so easy to get them. Going to get ELive DVD tonight, last weeks distro crashed hard after an update.

2nd Look, ok 3rd Look. grin.gif

I did another fresh install and then downloaded the latest ATI Radeon driver and installed it. I also selected the enhanced visual effects and then installed CrossOver for games. I had discovered in other installations that I needed to select a different bottle type for an application so this time I installed Full Tilt in a Vista bottle. Now it runs great. However when I installed Poker Stars in a Vista bottle it failed to connect to the internet. doh.gif Deleted it and reinstalled in a XP bottle and it now is fine also.

I think the video driver had more to do with it AND enabling the enhanced visual effects. I seem to remember that had to be done once in 8.10.

Oh well, either way I'm up fully with 9.04, just have to go add SUN JAVA 1.6 and the other things I use.

Hope this may be of some use to other people with Radeon ATI video cards. To be exact mine is the HD-3850 dual DVI out with the AGP 8x slot type.

What kind of framerates are you getting in GLXGears with your ATI driver?

I'm running the open source ATI driver in Arch and I'm only getting 415 or so.

I upgraded my wife's computer last night. I can kind of see what he meant by more polished, but it's not a lot. I noticed a change, but I don't think I'd say, "They polished the hell out of it."

I'm only getting 358. I think I'll switch drivers and try it again LOL.

OK, so I crashed 9.04 hard going back on drivers. Tried to config from a root term on recovery and no ATI cards found and the install file isn't on that drive for the ATI card, LOL. I'm officially a moron LOL.

Booted the Mandriva 2009-ONE and have an astounding fram rate! 30820 in 5 seconds for 6164 FPS loluhhuh.gif Now i know why the Mandriva looks so much better. Guess I'll boot my Mint 6 later and check it out too.

Yeah, I checked into loading the ATI proprietary drivers in Arch, but they seem to have problems with Xorg 1.6. That looks like the version of X Ubuntu is using too. If Mint is still based on Intrepid then it should be okay. What version of X is Mandriva using?

It may be just because my card on this laptop is so much older. I had to the use 9.3 version of the ATI driver, which wasn't compatible. But the open source driver (xf86-video-ati) seems slow to me.

Oh well, it works and composites with Metacity, but it's not very good with Compiz at all. Then again, I've been trying to avoid using an xorg.conf so I probably have some more configuration to try.

To continue beating this dead horse that is off topic....
