I'm downloading the ISO for a test run in an old P3 450MHz computer. Here's where to go for more info:

Mike, I just tried the live CD of crunchbang. The speed you can do things from the keyboard is amazing! My Belkin F5D7050 USB stick (version 4) worked, youtube videos played, I was able to mount my harddrive Music partition and play my music, chatted in X-chat and changed the background. I like how the shortcuts are listed to the side of the screen if you want to use the keyboard or if you like to use a mouse you can do that too. An excellent choice for an older machine - I should try it on my 600 MHz Dell.

I'm glad you liked it.
I was impressed with the speed of it on the 450mHz computer. I did notice a slight lag on opening software, but that's more due to the slow hard drive (and the size of modern software) than anything else.
What's also interesting is how Crunchbang does it. They use OpenBox instead of Gnome. The shortcut keys on the desktop are from Conky.
When I installed OpenBox on my laptop it didn't seem as usable as it did in Crunchbang. Then again, when I installed Gnome in Arch Linux it was pretty minimal too, more like what I was used to with Fedora. As Linux grows in popularity, I can see there being a market for customizations and config file "themes" that make your window manager/desktop environment work and look a certain way.
