I am new here and have to say I love this site. I have searched for this subject but have not found a definate answer if Extext will work with Smartype. Does anyone know if it is definately yes or no?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Dee, I used to use Smartype and as far as I know it will only work in Word. That is the reason I had to move on to another expander. I really do not know anything about Extext though.

Shorthand will definitely work with EXText. ARen't Shorthand and Smartype the same thing?
Edit -- whoops I see that they aren't. So anyway, I know Shorthand works. I used to work in EXText and used Shorthand just fine.

Thank you. I downloaded SH (trial), but it seems to me it works similar to my ESP program. I was hoping to use something to help me expand words or phrases that I have not done or thought of. That is what I liked about Smartype. IT is also something that stands out that would make my line count increase, as it gives suggestions. Unfortunately, it is very expensive as much as my Smartype. I am not sure my DH will let me spend another $200!!
Is there a way to get SH give suggestions like the IT & ST? (I know, it is a stupid question!)
Thanks again,
Dee

No, afaik SH will not give suggestions. What I do occasionally is take a bunch of one doctor's work and send it through this EXTRAKTOR website I found through this site. this will pull out all 3,4,5 word phrases in the document and tell you how many times it repeats, so you can add more shortcuts accordingly. It has helped me a great deal.
here is the website:

Momster,
I have used Smartype with ExText for two different places just fine.
The ST menu you are used to in regular Word on the menu bar will not show up when using ExText. You have to make sure you have the ST option checked to start ST when you start Word. Then it will come up every time ExText is started. You cannot add new SmartBlocks while in ExText, so if you want to use them you have to make note and add them later. You can add words/smartphrases to Smartype while in ExText using Cntrl3, delete words with Cntrl5 and modify position with Cntrl6.
ExText tends to block out your Autotext at least in the applications I was on.
I used ST and Shorthand while I used ExText (yes at the same time). I only used Shorthand for large normals and blocks as a work-around to not being able to add Smartblocks on the fly in ExText. I made sure not to have any other SH directories active, so there was no conflict with ST expansions (making sure not to name any normals or blocks the same as anything in Smartype). My SH directory was very specific only with blocks I was making for specific providers, and it was a fairly small directory, but since I already owned SH and did not really use it, this made a great supplement.
ExText has its own expander, and I had to disable it every session as it DID conflict with ST. (Tools - Templates&Add-Ins, uncheck the expander).
Good Luck!!

Kim, WOW. I just did what you said to do and there it was with my EXText! I am so excited! I stopped doing my report to thank you again. Now I am going to try it out!

Superb info, Kimzie! Thanks so much for sharing it. By the way, welcome to both you and Dee, too. This one question really led to a great thread!

EXText also uses Word, and I have used Smartype with EXText with success.
