Full Version: Medical Spell Check for Open Office
Productivity Talk > Software > OpenOffice/StarOffice

At this point there seems to be only one medical spell checker that works with OpenOffice/StarOffice, put out by Inductel, and available in separate versions for OO running on Windows, Mac, or Linux computers. The price is very reasonable, although I haven't had a chance yet to see what it contains and what more it might need added through a custom dictionary file.

Order spellcheck only for $29.95 here:

Sheila, I'm looking over the stuff at the Inductel site now. I haven't looked at everything closely yet -- I started with the speller/dictionary combo. And I'm confused. The page I'm looking at ( here ) indicates that there are versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but I don't see where there is actually a way to get the Linux version. Also says it is compatible with Word and WordPerfect, but I don't see OpenOffice/Star Office.

As I said, I've just started looking this over, and maybe I'll find the clue soon... But if you know a different place I should be looking, let me know, and I'll head over there. grin.gif

I'd like to try this entire thing out on Linux. I figure a future employer won't actually be using any of this, so I might as well go for the gusto on my own time! lol.gif

I wish Inductel had a trial version...

What, you want them to put out a spell checker and keep their site pages all updated? S_Devil19.gif

Click on the order link above and then hit the dropdown labeled Operating System--you'll see your option to order for Linux right there.

Click on the "Compatibilities" main link and you'll see the up-to-date list of what software the spell check works with.
Compatiblity

As for a trial version, yes, that would be nice, but when there is only one choice of product to purchase, it's not as necessary as when you are confronted by decisions. At the moment, you can use the Inductel medical spell check or no medical spell check on Linux. If you want something that isn't in Inductel, you will need to make entries in your custom dictionary.

Yeah, and I want to purchase it once and use it in both Windows and Linux, too! (A girl can dream...) lol.gif

Thanks! Guess I'm just not in "mousing around" mode today.

Any flavor I want as long as it's vanilla, eh?

You can purchase once, you just need to purchase two copies while you're buying. I'd suggest you look at it this way: Unlike Stedman, Inductel has no restrictions on how many total times you can install their software, and the price for their spell check is a third of the price of Stedman, so you are still saving 30% on your first installs if you buy both a Windows and a Linux license for Inductel; if you need to upgrade computers, reformat and reinstall, change operating systems, etc., it just gets cheaper and cheaper compared to Stedman.

That's because this is the only company that bothered to put out these kinds of specialty spell checkers for OOo, and the only company that would even discuss doing a Linux version when I was nosing around looking for a possible Linux spell check back when. I say send them a nice thank you note for being so forward looking and taking a chance on what is still a very tiny market and then send them your money as well as real encouragement.

I must have sounded like I was really complaining -- and that wasn't my intention. I need to give my smart-a** a break! lol.gif

I'm actually really delighted that this is available and grateful that you found it and posted this.

My biggest issue right now is that I'm pretty sure I'll exploring these programs for fun rather than profit, at least for starters. I *could* try all this out in Windows, and it would be more likely to be useful to the job at some point, but I'm really wanting to just take the Linux MT challenge. grin.gif

I agree that the price is really reasonable. I'm anxious to compare it to Stedman's and Dorland's electronic versions -- especially the dictionary part. (The pictures look cool!)
