Full Version: Transferring shortcuts

Hi everyone,

I just found this site yesterday, and what a wonderfully informative place this is! I was hoping someone could help me with a potential problem.

I've just tested for a national and passed, and I've learned that they supply a pc along with all the equipment. My problem is, how do I transfer the Smartype info from my pc to the new one without losing all the shortcuts I've created? confused.gif I haven't seen anything on the program that allows me to do this, but I'm probably just missing something right in front of my face!

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi, Kathy! Welcome to PT! It's great to have you and great to have a Smartype user! Thanks so much for the compliments about the board.

Well, I had a look around Barbara Grow's site (great info there for Smartype users), and then eventually ended up finding a PDF file about Smartype. This info I'm quoting below was on page 36. Whether it's all you need, I don't know, but I would imagine if you install Smartype on the new machine and then put in your backups......well, not being a Smartype user I'm not entirely sure, but I think this probably should help. I welcome other responses from users of the program.

Creating a Backup of your Stedman’s
Smartype Vocabulary

We strongly recommend that you periodically make a backup copy of
your Stedman’s Smartype Vocabulary in the event that your computer
crashes or you purchase a new computer. By creating a backup file, you
will retain any of the customizations you have added to your Stedman’s
Smartype Vocabulary in case you need to reload the program.

To fully backup your Stedman’s Smartype Vocabulary, you will need
to copy the following files to a floppy disk or CD-ROM:
• Stedman’s Smartype Vocab.vcb – this is the main Vocabulary
file included with Stedman’s Smartype, and contains any
SmartWords and SmartPhrases you have added, as well as
any modifications you have made to the existing SmartWords
and SmartPhrases. The default location for this file is
C:\Program Files\Stedman’s Smartype.

• all .doc files found in C:\Program Files\Stedman’s Smartype\
Blocks\ – these documents contain your SmartBlocks.

• normal.dot – this file is Microsoft Word’s global template file
and contains your SmartMacros. To locate this file on your
computer, select Search from the Start menu in Windows and
click on “For Files or Folders.”

I found the above in the Stedman's PDF document that can be gotten here

Harrie,

Thank you so much! I'm still learning the ropes with a word expander, but it was the best thing I ever did for production, or so I thought until I found this website! I'll be visiting here very often for updates and help in increasing my speed and production. Maybe someday I'll be able to contribute!

Thank you again,

Kathy

Well Kathy, in fact you already did contribute! I'm sure there are other ST users who might find the information above helpful, and it wouldn't have been posted if you hadn't asked! See how it goes? Don't you love it?! grin.gif

As I said, I'm not a Smartype user, but I do find myself wondering if, depending on whether you have the version that was there before Stedman's bought it, or if you bought it afterwards, there are any differences in the names of these files or where to find them. For instance, was it always a .vcb extension or not? Just wondering! Obviously one wouldn't look under Stedman's if they had the previous version, unless some upgrade or something was done.......I don't know, I'm just wondering out loud here! I do actually have the DOS version of Smartype!
